Australia is the world's largest exporter of beef, mutton, goat meat and wool, and a prominent exporter of lamb, pork and dairy products.
As a global exporter of meats to markets such as the United States, EU and the Middle East, Australian meat processing facilities are required by law to strictly comply with the respective registration and accreditation of the importer countries.
Overseas demand for Australian live exports is a driving force in the Australian livestock farming industry. The revenue from Australian livestock exports in 2009 reached nearly AUD $1 billion.
Export quantities reached last year were:
sheep 3.5 million (950,000 exported to Kuwait and 747,000 to Bahrain)
cattle 948,240 (768,133 exported to Indonesia and 59,000 to China)
goats 97,621 (88,800 exported to Malaysia)
Recognised for its superior quality wool, exports form a crucial part of Australia’s wool trade. In the 2008-2009 financial year Australia’s revenue from wool exports was AUD $2.3 billion. Australia supplies over 30% of the world’s total wool, over 80% of which is sent to China.
Dairy products are Australia’s fourth most valuable agricultural export, accounting for AUD $2.9 billion in revenue for the 2008-2009 financial year. Australia is the world’s fourth largest exporter of dairy products, with a 9% share of the international market. Over 70% of Australia’s dairy exports are sent to Asia.
